Since our company’s founding, Helms Polyfoam has proudly worked to permanently solve several “unsolvable” problems – both large and small – all with little to no downtime. When we are often approached by possible clients, many of them have already tried numerous other options that have cost several thousands of dollars and even more headaches.
Many of these problems are rooted in soil issues and aging infrastructure, which our area has no shortage of. We know firsthand how inconvenient and costly it can be to excavate a busy road to fix a leaking culvert or to have to wait days for concrete demolition and cure. That’s why our team is constantly pioneering new repairs where chemical grouting can not only solve the underlying problem, but also keep your bottom line from suffering.
Did we mention we do it all without ANY excavation? The disruption of chemical grouting is so minimal that most of our repairs are ready for traffic within 30 minutes! Read on below to learn more about how Helms helped solve a water undermining problem that stabilized a rural creek crossing bridge in Pontotoc!
The Problem: Bridge Repair
Bridges are an integral piece to our infrastructure puzzle and are subject to routine inspections to ensure structural integrity. Annual inspection of a rural road bridge in Pontotoc revealed exposed abutment and cap pilings that was caused by water undermining near or around the asphalt. This removed soil and fill material from around the metal and vertical supports, which exposed them to the elements.
Working conditions were less than favorable on this bridge, and without significant heavy construction, it did not allow for a convenient way to protect the pilings and fill the void. Repair costs aside, the idea of shutting down a roadway for days on end was enough to give any County Supervisor a case of heartburn. So, Helms decided to step in and help!
The Helms Solution
Chemical grouting checked the boxes for budget and downtime mitigation for this bridge project. Structural, expanding, hydro-insensitive, polyurethane resins and foam were used to fill all voids present underneath the bridge cap to provide necessary support. During the void fill process, exposed vertical supports were effectively coated to help mitigate future corrosion.
Lastly, a series of Deep Lift injections were performed along the bridge approach to mitigate future undermining. The entire project was completed in under 5 hours and the bridge did not have to be closed for the repair! Repair costs were also marginal compared to a traditional approach and our results are considered permanent. Chemical grouting was the easy, cost-effective solution for this infrastructure problem.
